After the initial stampede of media interest, what happened to the new generation of British jazz musicians as the dust began to settle? In the second of four programmes, John Fordham charts their progress and their connections beyond our shores. Some, like Julian Joseph , decided to study jazz in America but returned to live and work here. Saxophonist Andy Sheppard expanded his usual group into a 15-strong international big band including an American trombonist and a Dutch cellist. In the studio, saxophonist Steve Williamson and pianist
Jason Rebello both called up American stars to produce their debut albums. Producer John Goudie

John Woolrich's first opera is a dark, comic fairy story with a libretto by Marina Warner inspired by Apuleius's The Golden Ass. Aspects of surrealism, folklore and commedia dell'arte intermingle - and there is much cross-dressing as the members of the all-women cast switch gender.
Humphrey Carpenter introduces the first performance of the opera, given last July by Music Theatre Wales in Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre on the opening night of the Festival, and discusses it with the composer and Marina Warner.
