Charles Parker was one of the pioneers of radio in this country. Together with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger , he created an entirely new form of documentary in the radio ballad, which aired the actual sound of working people. Although Parker's achievement was celebrated by critics, he was prematurely retired from the BBC at the age of 53. Laurie Taylor investigates the poetry and philosophy behind Parker's work, as well as the political beliefs that inspired it. First broadcast on BBC Radio 4
