Wozzeck
A concert performance of Berg's gritty opera given earlier this month at the Royal Festival Hall, London.
Wozzeck was premiered in 1925 and is now a central work in 20th-century opera. Based on Georg Buchner 's
-,play Woyzeck, the opera follows the inevitable decline of a poor soldier who submits to harsh treatment from his superior officers in order to sustain his mistress Marie and their illegitimate child. Under stress, he loses the balance of his mind when he learns that Marie has been unfaithful.
Tragedy ensues. Sung in German.
London Oratory School Schola, London Voices, Philharmonia, conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi
