American composer John Adams visits Britain to conduct the London
Symphony Orchestra in a programme of his own music, as part of the Barbican Centre's Inventing America season. Highlights from Adams's second opera, The Death of Klinghoffer- based on the real-life hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro by Palestinian terrorists in 1984 - are complemented by a new piano concerto written for and played by Adams's friend Emanuel Ax. The work is inspired by the sound of music on 1920s piano rolls - from Gershwin to Rachmaninov, Jerry Roll Morton to Paderewski. Given earlier this month in the Barbican, London.
