In the vast gulag of Kolyma, one woman wrote with astonishing clarity of her mental and physical chains. Nina Hagen-Torn, a daring ethnographer and free thinker, was arrested twice - in 1937 and 1947. Her striking work was unknown and unpublished until very recently. "Jazz I regard as an American folk music. I believe it can be made the basis of serious symphonic works of lasting value." Gershwin pursued his serious symphonic goals in two richly scored pieces first performed in 1932: the Second Rhapsody for piano and orchestra, and the Cuban Overture, inspired by a vacation in Havana and making extensive use of Latin American percussion. The following year brought two further musicals - Pardon My English and Let 'Em Eat Cake - but these failed to match his earlier successes.

Gershwin playing his Three Preludes and modern interpretations of his music by arranger Dave Grusin and by Ella Fitzgerald , who made landmark recordings of over 50 Gershwin songs.
