5: Bartok. The great Hungarian composer came to Britain no less than 20 times, starting with an appearance with the Halle in 1904. He was admired as a pianist, but his compositions took longer to become established. Bartok had his supporters at the BBC, who continued to programme his music despite listeners' protests, and Henry Wood introduced Bartok's work to the Proms in 1925. "Do you think that now I am capable of grand opera? Because, you know, all I've got is a lot of talent and plenty of chutzpah."
Gershwin made this remark to Jerome Kern, the songwriter who had been his boyhood idol.
Rodney Greenberg features music from the true successor to Kern's Show Boat
- the folk opera Porgy and Bess.
Gershwin called it his labour of love, but he did not live to see it gain acceptance in opera houses worldwide. The programme also includes his last concert piece - the Variations on "I Got Rhythm".
Gershwin died in Hollywood at the age of only 38. Excerpts from his film scores show that his mastery of the popular song remained undimmed. As his brother Ira remarked, "He went back to his first love and did that better than ever before."

Two Strings to a Bow Purcell and Schubert
In the third of eight programmes, Gordon Stewart explores two composers from different centuries and finds remarkable similarities between them. Music for social occasions, chamber music and songs were part of their everyday life as composers and all feature in this programme, which includes Schubert sung by Alfreda Hodgson and Jill Gomez , and Purcell sung by Owen Brannigan ; Norbert Brainin and Lili Kraus give a vintage performance of Schubert's Sonatina in D, D384; the Philomusica of London, director
Thurston Dart , feature in a BBC recording made for Purcell's tercentenary in 1959, playing music written for King Charles Il's 24 violins; and the Gabrieli Quartet perform the B-flat quartet which Schubert wrote when he was 16.
