5: Bartok. The great Hungarian composer came to Britain no less than 20 times, starting with an appearance with the Halle in 1904. He was admired as a pianist, but his compositions took longer to become established. Bartok had his supporters at the BBC, who continued to programme his music despite listeners' protests, and Henry Wood introduced Bartok's work to the Proms in 1925.
