Jazz musicians have drawn on the riches of George Gershwin 's vast musical legacy for some 75 years, adapting his melodies and harmonies to fuel their own flights of inspiration. In this four-part series,
Geoffrey Smith examines the special character of Gershwin's compositions and investigates their appeal to jazz players and singers, surveying some first-rate performances in the process. This first programme includes records by Ella Fitzgerald , Oscar Peterson ,
Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden. Producer Derek Drescher

Tonight, on the centenary of George Gershwin's birth, Radio 3 presents a performance of the composer's satirical anti-war, anti-tycoon musical. It was created by Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira, to a book by George S. Kaufman. It opened unsuccessfully in Philadelphia in 1927 and was extensively revised before it eventually opened on Broadway in 1930, where it ran for a respectable 191 performances.
Dick Vosburgh introduces a recording of the Lost Musicals Charitable Trust production, a restoration of the 1927 version, given earlier this month at the Barbican, directed for the stage by Ian Marshall Fisher.

During the interval, Dick Vosburgh talks to Anne Kaufman Schneider - daughter of George S. Kaufman - about her father's work.

Six programmes in which Professor Steve Jones reassesses the legacy of Charles Darwin 's Origin of Species. It was first published in 1859, and few books can have had a more profound effect on how we interpret the world. Even today, scientific enterprise and artistic endeavour are driven by Darwin's lucid prose and artful argument. Over the next six weeks, Steve Jones talks to scientists who are discovering just how natural selection affects almost every aspect of life, and to artists who find the miracle of nature a constant source of inspiration.
