SOUNDING THE CENTURY

Tonight, on the centenary of George Gershwin's birth, Radio 3 presents a performance of the composer's satirical anti-war, anti-tycoon musical. It was created by Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira, to a book by George S. Kaufman. It opened unsuccessfully in Philadelphia in 1927 and was extensively revised before it eventually opened on Broadway in 1930, where it ran for a respectable 191 performances.
Dick Vosburgh introduces a recording of the Lost Musicals Charitable Trust production, a restoration of the 1927 version, given earlier this month at the Barbican, directed for the stage by Ian Marshall Fisher.

During the interval, Dick Vosburgh talks to Anne Kaufman Schneider - daughter of George S. Kaufman - about her father's work.
