Michael Berkeley 's guest is the writer and scholar Jane Stevenson , Reader in English at the University of Aberdeen. She is currently working on a fictional trilogy set in 17th-century Europe, of which the first two parts, Astraea and The Pretender, have been widely praised as "worthy of the highest traditions of English fiction". She is keenly interested in early music and her choices today include songs by Campion, Johnson and Purcell, a drinking song from the original Carmina Burana, a nocturne by John Field , and music from South America. Mr Gone: The Wayne Shorter Story
4: High Life. Since the demise of Weather Report in 1985, Shorter has continued to write challenging, forward-looking music. With his latest quartet formed of young virtuosi, Shorter has returned to his acoustic roots, revisiting and transforming his earlier compositions. The group's concerts and recordings have been universally acclaimed and their appearance at the Royal Festival Hall was the highlight of last year's London Jazz Festival.
