Richard Strauss 's Ariadne auf Naxos, in a new production by Christof Loy , is conducted by Antonio Pappano in his first appearance as the new music director of the Royal Opera. In the Prologue, preparations are underway at the home of the richest man in Vienna for the performance of a new opera to be followed by a comedy. But time is short and the major-domo announces that both entertainments have to take place simultaneously, with spectacular effect. Presented by Christopher Cook.

Jez Nelson continues his four-part profile of the influential saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
After he left Miles Davis, Shorter teamed up with keyboard player Joe Zawinulto form the jazz-fusion group Weather Report. Fans of Shorter's earlier work often have misgivings about the band, feeling that it became increasingly dominated by Zawinul. However, in this programme, Weather Report drummer Peter Erskine reveals some intriguing facts about how the creative partnership really worked.

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales makes its annual visit to the Vale of Glamorgan Festival with a programme of works centred on Baltic composers. The orchestra, conducted by Petri Sakari, is joined by soloists David Geringas (cello) and David Pyatt (horn). The programme also includes recordings of works byTakemitsu.
