Joshua Rifkin begins a six-part journey around the places where Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked, beginning at the composer's birthplace, Eisenach. After a tour of the village, he visits the house where Bach is said to have been born, and hears some of his earliest pieces, played by Zvi Meniker on a contemporary harpsichord.

Stephen Johnson concludes his exploration of the BBC archive recordings from the Edinburgh Festival with a look at the festival in the early 1960's. Music includes two performances by the Philharmonia: the second movement of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6 in B minor (Pathetique) conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini , and David Oistrakh's 1962 performance of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No 1 conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.

Palio Accelerando. Twice a year in the Tuscan city of Siena, ten of the city's 17 contradas or districts compete in the Palio, a breakneck horse race without stirrups or saddles around the city's main square, the Piazza del Campo. The race is preceded by a two-hour procession of medieval splendour before the horses line up, watched by 10,000 Siennese citizens crammed into the middle of the square.
