Millions are spent each yearteaching science but how much of it sinks into the minds of those beingtaught?
New evidence from Harvard University in America and from Leeds indicates that the way science is taught may guarantee misunderstanding.
Many people leave school, and even university, with little grasp of basic concepts - despite passingtheir science exams.
This programme points to flaws in the testing system and demonstrates that teachers often hold the same misconceptions as their pupils. Video footage reveals that children may often have a clearer picture of how the world works before they enterthe classroom than afterwards. Simple Minds asks why science isn't getting across, and what the implications are for society. Producer Simon Dickson

The five babies are now 7 months old and beginning to take an interest in toys. But why do babies play and what sort of toys should they be bought?
The programme also looks at why boys and girls behave differently. Many parents claim they treat their sons and daughters in the same way, but Baby
Monthly puts three mothers to the test and discovers that a lot of their behaviourtowards boys and girls is subconscious and deep-rooted.
With three of the mothers back at work, the programme looks at the difficulties they have had in getting childcare. It asks the question all working mothers want answered - will leaving a baby with someone else affect its development?
