The Kirov Ballet returns to
London next week for a season at the London Coliseum. Tonight, to celebrate the occasion, Irek Mukhamedov, former star of the Bolshoi
Ballet, Moscow, and now with the Royal Ballet, introduces four pieces from the Kirov's repertoire. Current male star Faroukh Ruzimatov dances the famous pas de deux from Le Corsaire with Lyubov Kunakova. This was the dance that helped establish Rudolf Nureyev 's reputation in the west. Added to this are the rare jewel Markitenka, Petipa's glittering divertissement from Paquita and Mikhail Fokine 's first masterpiece Chopiniana, better known in the west as Les Sylphides, and danced by four great stars of the Kirov,
Altynay Assylmuratova , Yelena Pankova , Konstantin Zaklinsky and Anna Polikarpova. Director Thomas Grimm

From Baltusrol, New Jersey.
The final round of the US Open Golf Championship, the season's second major tournament, fought out over one of America's finest tree-lined parkland courses. The club, one of America's oldest, was founded in 1895 and takes its name from the mountain it lies beneath, itself named after a local farmer,
Dutch immigrant Baltus Roll. Last year's title was won by Tom Kite at Pebble Beach: although this was his first major championship win in 20 years, he had, in the meantime, become the game's biggest earner.
This year, the strong European contingent led by Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo are seeking the first European victory for 23years. Introduced by Steve Rider , with commentary by Peter Alliss , Bruce Critchley and Dave Marr.
