Last year seven Europeans managed to survive the Friday-night cut and Scottish Ryder Cup player Colin Montgomerie, who at one tantalising stage was the leader in the clubhouse after a magnificent last-round 70 giving him a level-par 288, was eventually nudged into third place behind winner Tom Kite and second-placed Jeff Sluman.
