Until the early 1900s, Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg adhered to a late Romantic style, meeting with critical and popular success. Then his music began to break the bounds of traditional harmony and tonality, culminating in the development of his revolutionary method of composing using all 12 notes of the chromatic scale equally.
Public taste was outraged, and Schoenberg faced years of controversy: his self-termed "war years" between 1904 to 1923, when he often lived in poverty and isolation.
Focusing on that period, this film interweaves archive footage, photographs and location shots with dramatic re-enactments in the form of "home movies" and recreated
"interviews" with Schoenberg's contemporaries, including Webern, Berg, Zemlinsky, Kandinsky, Kokoschka and Alma Mahler. Performers include the Ensemble
Intercontemporain and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pierre Boulez and Michael Tilson Thomas.
Director Larry Weinstein
(A performance of Schoenberg's
Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is on BBC2 tomorrowat 7.40pm)
