British chef Richard Shepherd goes on a cook's tour of America to learn about the traditional cuisine of US blacks. In Atlanta, Georgia, he becomes a sous-chef under the king of soul food, and in New York is chauffered to some of the best soul-food restaurants, at one of which he discovers a hot gospel group and has to sing for his supper.
