While the west worries about global warming, India faces an immediate environmental crisis that threatens many millions of Indians whose livelihoods depend on the land. The country's forests, farmlands, air and water are deteriorating rapidly. Industrial development and over-exploitation are taking a heavy toll. Until recently, India tried to escape the twin traps of poverty and underdevelopment through a policy of 'big is beautiful'. Massive industrial and hydro-electrical projects were seen as the path to economic salvation. But India today has a legacy of polluted water, degraded farmland and disappearing forests. The dilemma facing the country is stark: how can India develop without destroying its natural resources? Can its future be greener as well as richer? Narrated by Roshan Seth. Producer Charles Bruce
Executive producer Narendhra Morar ● TELETEXT SUBTITLES: page 888

First showing on network television for the drama, starring James Caan, James Earl Jones

1968: while the war rages in Vietnam, Sergeant Clell Hazard, a decorated veteran, is assigned to Fort Myer, Virginia, where his unit conducts military burials at Arlington National Cemetery. As he and other old soldiers work out their frustrations in debates over the war, they are sent more and more flag-draped coffins. This elegant and subtle film from Francis Coppola, director of Apocalypse Now, continues his observations on the war that tore America apart. James Caan was seen recently in the film Misery.

Jeanne runs a small hotel-restaurant in a country town. She is bullied by her mother and bored by her husband. Into this mundane world comes the new landlord of the property, a man used to having his own way. Suddenly Jeanne is torn between her wifely loyalties and a new lover. The solution is as outrageous as it is practical. This was the first major full-length feature from actress-turned-director Magali Clement. A French film with English subtitles.
