Huw Wheldon was founding editor and presenter of Monitor, the BBC's first television arts magazine. In this year's lecture to the Royal Television Society, music and arts broadcaster Humphrey Burton , who worked closely with him in the late 50s and early 60s, gives a first-hand account of the achievements of Monitorand suggests that today's programme-makers have much to learn from those pioneering days. Among the examples used by Burton are films commissioned by Wheldon from two young directors who went on to greater things, Ken Russell and John Schlesinger , and studio interviews with Orson Welles and Ninette de Valois.

USA v Europe
Live coverage from Kiawah Island of this afternoon's fourball matches, involving eight players from each team. Conceived in 1927 as a challenge between Britain and America, the Ryder Cup became a Europe v America contest in 1979 after a string of defeats for the British team, punctuated by only one victory in 1957. In 1985, Europe claimed their first success at the Belfry, in front of a rapturous home crowd. In 1987, Tony Jacklin 's side became the first to beat the Americans on their own soil.
Will that triumph be repeated this year in South Carolina? The captain's strategy is all-important. Blending inexperienced players with experienced superstars is a delicate but crucial equation. Introduced by Steve Rider.
