Managing Midland
The Midland Bank is in the midst of change, and the Chairman Sir Kit McMahon believes his rescue plan has reached a critical stage. His twin-track approach means radical cost cutting and a drive to develop and sell new products to customers. If it fails a new takeover attempt seems inevitable. So is it make or break for Midland? Nisha Steyn reports.

Football managers lead notoriously precarious lives. There's no room for failure. The world of football is in a ferment. But what about the game itself? What counts on the pitch - personality or strategy? What matters?

First of six programmes

"Dear Radio Times,
Hooray for Alexei Sayle! The funniest TV show since The Good Life. What a tonic his series Stuff is. I haven't laughed so much since Margo fell flat on her face in the compost heap. One tiny request, though, could you get rid of that Fat Bastard in the tight suit and put in more scenes with Felicity Kendal wrinkling her nose up?
Many, many thanks"
(Mrs) D.W. Piper, Bude, Cornwall

"Who gives a damn what you think?" Alexei Sayle

Women first filmed in the 60s tell the story of their lives over the past 20 years. Agnes and Jeanie
In 1966 Agnes Henderson and Jeanie Read lived on opposite sides of a run-down Georgian square in north London.
Agnes was a bus conductress and sculptress, and Jeanie was a working mum.
In 23 years Gibson Square has changed from a dilapidated, mainly working-class neighbourhood to an exclusive - and expensive - area. What happened to two of its original tenants when the prices went up?

Canadian Grand Prix
The Grand Prix circus has moved 2,000 miles north from the heat of Phoenix to the ÃŽle Notre-Dame at Montreal on the St Lawrence Seaway. But it's going to take more than a changing climate to break the stranglehold the McLaren team has on the World Championship.
Alain Prost, who has scored in every race this season, leads from team mate
Ayrton Senna, who won here last year.
It's also the final part of the 1989 Grand Prix competition, with a trip to the Spanish Grand Prix in October as the top prize.
