Horseshoe crabs scuttle across the beach to take part in a mating orgy that's 300 million years old. A slender pipefish gives birth-nothing unusual in that-except the pipefish is male. A newly hatched turtle heads unerringly towards the ocean it has never seen.

These are just some of the star turns in this portrait of Pleasant Bay, a small stretch of water and marshland in New England, on the East coast of America. A group of American film-makers spent a year observing and recording the life of the bay; the result is a remarkable close-up look at a natural habitat and at the bizarre and beautiful creatures that live there.
