A series of 12 explorations with Professor W. G. Hoskins
4: Kent - Landscape of Peace and War
The Kent hop fields and orchards seem the last place to look for an early industrial landscape. It's even more surprising to find the scene of an industry of war. But, often hidden by woods and undergrowth, traces of man's activity on a large scale can be found.
Hoskins is a masterly social historian: encyclopedic, informative, humorous and quirky without aggressiveness.

A beautiful and lucid film with remarkable photography. (THE GUARDIAN) Poignant and dramatic. (DAILY MAIL) I would like to think the burning of Tigris illuminated a dark and troubled part of Africa. (DAILY EXPRESS) Written and produced by BRUCE NORMAN

Venice Preserved An Inquiry with John Julius Norwich
Flood, desolation, ruin-these have all been predicted as the fate of the world's most beautiful city. But a vast international rescue attempt is already under way. The British alone have restored the Church of San Nicolo dei Mendicoli to its original glittering brilliance, cleaned the principal entrance to the Doge's Palace and are contributing to the renewal of the marvellous Cathedral of Torcello.
The Venetians themselves are tackling the problems of water and air pollution, renovating houses in the oldest parts of the city and taking measures to prevent the city sinking any further. But the greatest menace still remains- flooding from the sea. Can the Italians solve the problem? Can they learn from the Thames Barrier? How much have the city's chances of survival improved in the last decade?

Jeni Barnett presents the self-help show, an irreverent approach to the serious efforts of community action groups, neighbours and individuals to sort things out for themselves. Is there anything too big for self-help to tackle - or too small? Why not take on authority yourself, using mass media methods like film, local radio and pamphlets to put your point across? We meet people from different parts of the British Isles who are having a go. Look in-then you might get off your backside yourself.
