The bird cannot fly. It becomes huge and savage. But the women of the Wola tribe foster their cassowary chicks like children, and keep them as precious members of the tribe until maturity. For in the highlands of New Guinea a family's prestige is measured by the number of cassowaries they capture and raise, and their worth by the selflessness with which they offer the birds for sacrifice.
