The operetta is set on a magnificent estate in Hungary complete with wild horses, loving servants and a full gypsy orchestra. Romani is owned by the beautiful Countess Mariza. Tassilo, an impoverished Count, has been working as her bailiff for some time, but they have never met. As the story opens Mariza is about to pay a rare visit to Romani to celebrate her engagement to a fictitious fiance, in order to deter her numerous admirers.
