Alcatraz, the rocky fortress of San Francisco Bay, was once the ' Devil's Island' of the American penal system. In its dank, tiered cages lived only the most desperate, dangerous or notorious criminals. Al Capone , Machinegun Kelly , Robert Stroud the famous Birdman, all knew Alcatraz as the end of the line, the final proof against escape. Donny MacLeod visited the island with former bank-robber Frank Hatfield , who spent eight years there.
' The first sight of Alcatraz was so horrific I thought to myself "That's the place I'm gonna die'", he says. ' The halls echoed with the cries of sea birds like lost souls crying in the night.'
