Edge of the Blizzard 2: Ocean Wanderers
The albatrosses - largest of oceanic birds - can circumnavigate the globe several times a year. Gigantic elephant seals swim beneath sub-antarctic seas. But both must come ashore to breed.
There are striking contrasts between the private lives of elephant seals and black-browed and wandering albatrosses which home in Macquarie Island, 2,000 km south of Australia. The wanderers' complex dances and displays lead to a life-long marriage which can last
50 years. But four-ton bull elephant seals battle for harems which may contain 100 females-encounters which rank amongst the most extraordinary sights in nature.
