The Curious Cat
Narrated by ELEANOR BRON
Most people have strong feelings about cats; you either like them or dislike them. But few of us have ever glimpsed the private, undomestic world of the ordinary cat. So a unique field study was set up by the BBC and Oxford University, in the heart of the Devon countryside. On open farmland and away from the shelter of human influence, four feral cats - a mature torn and three females - were studied and filmed for a year. In charge of the project was David Macdonald , who has been able to piece together a picture of the cat which will make us all -whether cat-lovers or not -think quite differently about an animal which for centuries we have taken for granted.

For ten days in each year, Sidmouth in East Devon forgets its stately tag and Regency ties to welcome the young people of the world. From Canada and California, Mexico and Marseilles they come by the hundred, as Tony Beard describes, for a swirling carnival of music and dance that lasts from dawn to dawn.

Almost exactly a year ago, Inside Story examined the case of Timothy [text removed], a hyperactive mongol, whom Solihull Social Services Department were determined to uproot from his residential home in the country to an urban day-care centre in Birmingham. It was a move resisted by Timmy's parents, who fought the Department - and thought that they had won. But this continuation of Timmy's story shows how mistaken the parents were to believe that all was well...
