Train fares in Britain are already the most expensive in Europe.
Next month they go up by another 19 per cent But British
Rail claims that unless Whitehall relaxes its cash limits even further, its trains will become slower, dirtier and less reliable. We are , says BR chief Sir Peter Parker ,
' at the crumbling edge of quality.' Critics say BR has overspent on glamorous high-speed trains at the expense of the ageing commuter lines, while productivity on freight trains is almost the worst in Europe.
