In 1978, Sir Bernard de Hoghton succeeded to the oldest baronetcy in England. But when he hGlds a banquet to commemorate the knighting by James I of a loin of beef (hence ' sirloin'!) at Hoghton Tower, the 14th baronet is not remembering how his ancestor landed in the 'Fleet Prison for debt as. a result of the feasting, but calculating how much this ' do ' will raise towards repairing the £100,000-worth of dry rot above his head.

A railway dies when its heart is rotten and its owners no longer believe in it. In 1954, the narrow-gauge Festiniog line in North Wales was dead. It had turned away passengers, trees grew through its track, and its upper section was soon to be drowned by a hydro-electric scheme.
From the earliest days, when hordes of workmen struggled to build its mile-long embankment across the tide-ripped Glaslyn estuary, the line had a threatened existence. But the latest disaster seemed final.
Railway expert Robert Symes uncovers the background story of the Festiniog's many brushes with death, and how a new generation of determined men brought it triumphantly to life once more.

If distances by air from London were measured in money rather than miles, then the Shetland Isles would be further than Boston and Geneva would be only a little short of New York.
Why is it that air travel in the United Kingdom and in Europe costs two, three and even four times as much per mile as it does over the Atlantic or in North America? Is it lack of true competition? Is it lack of sufficient passenger volume? Is it perhaps just inefficency?
Jenny Conway and Nick Ross investigate. Will an alleged system of ' price-fixing ' among European ' state ' airlines be declared illegal - under the Treaty of Rome? Will the day come when one will be able to fly to Stockholm or Naples (1,000 miles) for appreciably less than one can fly all the way (5,500 miles) to Los Angeles today?
