The Other Kenya
Kenya is a paradise for tourists. But for the poorer people living there, the sunny beaches are irrelevant, the wild animals take the crops, and the beautiful countryside is in the hands of a minority who use it to grow tea and coffee to send to the developed world. In tonight's Horizon, three family groups tell their own stories.
Mary Kalwale and her children have a tiny plot in the fertile, wet highlands. Her husband has been trying for years to get work in the city. Their children will grow up without the land they need for survival.
Hassan Barongo 's father had to move from this fertile land many years ago. His family are illegal squatters in ' marginal' land. As it is, they can hardly make ends meet. They may have to move to the city at any time to find money.
Lucy Wanjigu supports four children in the Nairobi slums. She has had to become a prostitute to do so. That alone saves her and her family from destitution.
All these people are friendly, intelligent and willing to work hard. They are on the edge of disaster because their land is being used to give us tea and coffee. Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN
