In 1978, Sir Bernard de Hoghton succeeded to the oldest baronetcy in England. But when he hGlds a banquet to commemorate the knighting by James I of a loin of beef (hence ' sirloin'!) at Hoghton Tower, the 14th baronet is not remembering how his ancestor landed in the 'Fleet Prison for debt as. a result of the feasting, but calculating how much this ' do ' will raise towards repairing the £100,000-worth of dry rot above his head.
