La Regle du Jeu
Starring Marcel Dalio Nora Gregor
Christine, beautiful and wilful, is torn between a dashing young admirer, her rich husband and an old childhood friend. Then a crime passionnel takes place during a smart house-party at the chateau of the Marquis de la Chesnaye and as the threads of the affair are unravelled, the complete breakdown and decay of a social class emerge in this biting indictment of a society without values where flirtation and adultery take the place of love. The climax of the film, in which a rabbit-shoot degenerates into a human battle, remains one of the most powerful sequences in the history of the cinema.

by Samuel Beckett
Starring Billie Whitelaw
With Leonard Fenton

In May of this year Samuel Beckett, playwright, novelist and Nobel Prizewinner, came to London to direct a new version of his classic of modern theatre. This television presentation, specially produced for In Performance, is a rare opportunity to see how Beckett interprets his own work.

"The earth is very tight today, can it be I have put on flesh, I trust not."
Winnie, buried to her waist in a sandy mound, struggles to get through her day, searching for distractions that will stave off the panic of having nothing to say, nothing to do, no reason to continue living. Willie, her husband, offers little help.
Out of this bizarre and improbable setting Beckett makes a play that has many comic and touching moments. For an actress it is one of the most challenging parts in modern theatre. This is Billie Whitelaw's fifth production for Beckett.

A film in four acts starring Liv Ullmann
Erland Josephson Act 2
While her husband is away on a business trip, Jenny Isaksson is staying with her grandparents. A mysterious message summons her to her house where she finds one of her patients, drugged, and has a disturbing encounter with two intruders. Suddenly Jenny becomes aware of her frigidity, her insecurity and her isolation and the realisation is more than she can bear.
Ingmar Bergman 's own personal turmoil is reflected in this story of a well-adjusted, capable and disciplined person whose shockingly quick breakdown is followed by an agonising rebirth.
