A series of three film reports by Trevor Philpott
If we include every man, woman and child, every teetotaller and every tiny tot, the British public spends on average £2 a week on alcoholic drink. Well over half of that goes on beer.
The jolly brewer and his good honest ale have been part of the British tradition for 300 years. But in the last generation momentous changes have taken place in the brewing industry. The national giants have been born. What is left now of the famous families who were known as the Beerage? What has happened to the beer they brewed? How much of the jollity and how much of the quality is left?
with Rene Cutforth
The first of three weekly films.
' They were on the wing - in flight from guilt. They flew on the wings of Peter Pan -they were determined not to grow up; on the wings of alcohol and cocaine - they were determined not to sober up; on the wings of speed, of sex, of the spirit of competition ... They never touched down until the final crash-landing in 1929.' Thus, in a highly personal account, RENE CUTFORTH sums up the spirit of The Twenties-the decade which began in the shadow of the first Great World War and ended with the stock-market crash which plunged us into the Depression. These hectic years saw the start of commercial aeroplanes, bobbed hair, Noel Coward , the BBC and the Picture Palace.
