Ingmar Bergman 's celebrated portrait of an apparently ' perfect' marriage and its gradual disintegration is shown again-this time in its original Swedish version. Scene 1: Innocence and Panic Johan and Marianne are being interviewed for a women's magazine as a shining example of the ideal married couple. But at a dinner-party they give, a frightening quarrel breaks out between their guests Peter and Katarina. Soon afterwards, the first crack appears in Johan and Marianne's own relationship.

An extravagant and bizarre film by Salvador Dali , Surrealist painter. He has taken themes of the French writer Raymond Roussel (1877-1933), rated by Sartre and Cocteau as one of the masters of 20th-century literature. Medieval alchemy, ' miracle and madness machines ' are rich material in the hands of this inventive artist, who can, as he points out, make an entire film about the point of a pencil. Dali has made two films before, Le Chien Andalou (1927) and L'Age D'or (1930), both major classics of the cinema.
This is the first of four programmes on European art and artists.
