One of the most popular painters from his time to our own was born 400 years ago today. His full and fascinating life is celebrated in this film, shot on location in Antwerp, Paris, Venice, Mantua, Rome, London and Madrid. Also richly represented are all aspects of his work; fleshy nudes of luscious sensuality; monumental and moving religious works; action-packed dramas of battle and rape; and the serene landscapes of his last years.
Robert Hughes , writer and narrator, introduces the film with these words: ' Fame, money, beautiful lovers. Such, Sigmund Freud instructs us, are the principal goals in an artist's life, and it's certain that no painter in the history of Western art achieved them more abundantly than Sir Peter Paul Rubens.
