featuring The 1977 Spillers Greyhound Derby

The Greyhound Derby originated at the White City Stadium 50 years ago. From the first the prize money was high, ensuring that it was the race of the year. In 1927 Entry Badge won £1,000; tonight the first dog past the post picks up £17,500 for its owner - over £600 a second! In addition to live coverage of two other greyhound races on this gala evening, David Vine recalls the sporting years of the White City from its opening for the 1908 Olympic Games and talks to some of the people who contributed to a history that includes such diverse events as the Chataway V Kuts classic 5,000 metre race, Freddie Mills v Gus Lesnevich for the World Light Heavyweight title, and that most famous of all show jumping horses, Foxhunter, ridden by Colonel Harry Llewellyn, winning the King George V Cup.
