Kojak and Co ...
1 American television is a market place,' comments a Hollywood screenwriter, ' he who pays the money calls the tune ... ' and the tune reaches 100 million viewers in the United States and 400 million in 95 other countries in the world.
The biggest money spinners for America's three commercial networks are the series, like Kojak. Six hundred hours of them are churned out every year. But can such an output ever be creative or is it all just a means to sell a product?
Worldwide takes a behind-the-scenes look at America's commercial television with some of its programme makers, advertisers and stars. -

A series of programmes made specially for audiences in the BBC regions and now seen for the first time throughout the United Kingdom.
Tonight from BBC North West Vivian Whiteley - On Her Own
Vivian's husband Tony Whiteley died of lung cancer when he was 34 years old. Vivian was left with two children, Joseph, aged three, and Thomas, less than a year old. During the months before Tony's death in July 1974 he and Vivian made plans for the future. For Tony the purpose was to prepare his family for a life without him; for Vivian it was to find a way of going on living. ' Remember all the Good Things' showed how they tackled the problems they faced.
Now Vivian can tell whether or not the plans were helpful, whether or not the practical preparations they found the courage to make have proved useful.
' Suddenly you are alone, instead of being two people,' she says. ' Just when you think you are going along all right it's brought home every time that you're on your own ... you're on your own.' Vivian Whiteley is one of more than three million widows in this country. Joseph and Thomas are among one million fatherless children.
