Pia Degermark , Thommy Berggren In 1889 Lieutenant Count Sixten Sparre deserted from the Swedish army and ran away to Denmark with Elvira Madigan , a tightrope dancer. After an idyllic summer, seeing no future for their love they chose to die together in the forest.
