A Sheltered Existence
Narrator David Attenborough
At some time in their lives many mammals, fish, insects, and birds have to build themselves a shelter. Their ingenuity is amazing; for example, one bird builds a two-roomed flat out of reinforced concrete and there's a shrimp which decorates its doorstep with shells. Of course, we humans think we are the master builders but now architects are beginning to realise that there are some things about building that we can learn from the birds and the bees ...

' I do like to be beside the seaside ' and Buxtehude's Prelude and Fugue in D major have very little in common except that both can be performed in their appropriate styles on the organ of the Royal Festival Hall.
In this film Simon Preston takes a chronological journey through the organist's repertoire, stopping en route to explain the various tonal devices, e.g., stops, manuals, and pedals, and sets out to show that the Royal Festival Hall organ needs to be a thousand instruments to accommodate the many different kinds of sound that organ music requires.
Simon Preston , who is Organist and Lecturer in Music at Christ Church, Oxford, illustrates his journey with music by Bach, Buxtehude, Handel. Cesar Franck, Couperin, Messiaen and Vierne together with an ear-boggling version of The Ride of the Valkyries.

In New York in the late 1930s, young David Kolowitz works in Mr Foreman 's sewing-machine shop. But what David really wants to do is go on the stage, so when he gets the chance to join actor-manager Mr Marlowe 's seedy theatre company he's even willing to pay Marlowe five dollars a week for the privilege of working for him!
