Gaucho
The gaucho is Argentina's version of the cowboy. But while the cowboy of North American legend disappeared long ago, in some parts of Argentina the gaucho remains very much as he always was; tough, proud, independent, with his own half-savage code of conduct.
On a cattle ranch in the remote north-eastern province of Corrientes, the gaucho has changed least of all. He dresses like the gauchos of 100 years ago and retains old customs and skills at horse-breaking and cattle herding through the roughest terrain.
Four hundred miles to the south, near the big city of Buenos Aires, the gaucho cult has become sophisticated and self-conscious. Here, myths have grown up around the gaucho, myths that can obscure the fact that in some remote parts of Argentina the gaucho lives on. Narrator JORGE DURRIEU

conducts
The London Symphony Orchestra leader john BROWN in a performance of Shostakovich Symphony No 5
In 1936 Shostakovich became the target for many .bitter attacks-political and artistic. In his native Russia his music was ignored; professionally, most of his colleagues shunned him.
Despite this, his reply was not a mumbled apology but the courageous, magnificent Fifth Symphony. He called it ' An artist's reply to just criticism.' Its theme - ' The Making of a Man.' ' I saw Man with all his experiences in the centre of the composition, which is lyrical in form from the beginning to the end.'
