'Most people probably know that Simenon is Belgian. Or Cesar Franck? But would you have guessed the same about Mistinguett, Hercule Poirot or Mr Sax who invented the saxophone, or Tyll Eulenspiegl, or Redouté who painted all those lovely French roses? They are indeed an odd combination of people: some of them are Flemish, speaking Dutch, some are Walloons, speaking French, some even speak German. All of them are Belgians, sharing three cultures and three languages.'
Peter Adam's last programme in this series looks at some of the Belgians' controversial cultural issues. It puts the question 'What unites them, what divides them?' to politicians, teachers, architects, students, bankers, painters, writers and actors.
There is an interview with Maurice Bejart and excerpts from his latest spectacular ballet, The Triumphs of Petrarch; extracts from several opera and theatre productions; and an interview with Herge (one of Europe's best-selling authors), creator of Tintin.
