Once it was a royal hunting ground - the play-patch of King John. Today much of the forest has been felled, the downland ploughed, yet this new landscape of the Chase may soon be officially declared an area of outstanding beauty. It's the haunt of mad March hares, shy roe deer with their extraordinary running courtship, and rare and mysterious stone curlews.

Eric Ashby, one of the most patient of animal film-makers, has been watching the natural goings-on of this secluded area of southern England, and this film is the end result of two years of painstaking work.
