A film series introduced by Bernard Venables

Float-fishing on the Bridgewater Canal in Somerset on a summer's day.

There is no more exciting sight to the angler than the cluster of oily bubbles which come breaking at the surface-a clue that the tench has at last been attracted through the mud-bottomed, weed jungle to where your baitis resting. Tentative mouthings round your hook follow. Then the atmosphere of the lazy late summer's day alters from the tense to the intense. As the angler strikes, the behaviour of the lethargic tench is transformed to a bold and cunning strategy. The fish plunges deep, using the weeds to try to lose the hook or break the line; success for the fishermen is never sure until the glistening tench is safely landed.

A community of the future - puritan, superstitious, inward-looking - confined within The Ship. They have been there for generations, and have long forgotten whatever purpose put them there. They worship meaningless symbols with elaborate ritual. They know that one day they will feel a tremor in the ship, but only one young man has inherited the secret of what must be done when the tremor comes.

Weltspiegel, Continents sans Visa A Toda Plana, Estafeta, Realta
These are just some of the television programmes in both West and East Europe which regularly contribute to Europa. The programme has been called a European window on the world. Each week it looks at the stories and issues that have informed, entertained, and sometimes angered viewers across a continent.
It examines their attitudes and prejudices and, in so doing, perhaps recognises some of our own.
