Today's story: "The King who Wanted to Reach the Moon" from "The Fairy Tale Tree" Translated by Jean Leyton

Things up high and down below - that is what Play School is about this week. In today's story there is a king who nearly gets to the moon and tomorrow the toys dress up for a flying trip. On Pets Day Rick finds a poem about an animal that lives underneath the ground.

The High Chaparral ...is the bid of a family seeking roots in the newly won West
...is the threat to the new settlers from Mexicans and Indians
...and spells adventure in the Arizona territory of 1870

In yet another attempt to maintain peace in the territory John establishes an Apache reservation. A government agent, Captain Surtee, is appointed to control it, but he is surprisingly ineffectual, and his lack of success brings trouble rather than peace. Big John suspects Surtee of being involved in the theft of government cattle, and he takes the law into his own hands and fires Surtee who has been treating the hungry reservation Indians harshly.

A series which explores living memory

In 1903 the aeroplane raised itself off the ground for the first time and stayed aloft for twelve glorious seconds. A new age had begun.
In tonight's film pioneer aviators recall their first experiences of powered flight.

"The only way to learn to fly was to go and teach yourself... Most of us did our first flight involuntarily. One looked over the side and found the ground had gone. Well, there you were, you were in the air and you'd got to do something about it!"

Taking part: Sir Richard Atcherley, Sir Alan Cobham, Charles Dollfus, E.C. Gordon England, Cecil Pashley, Sir Thomas Sopwith, C.H. Watkins

(Next week: George Pearson - pioneer film maker)
