from the Aldeburgh Festival Concert Hall
A weekly series featuring some of the world's top jazz artists in concert
Introduced by Benny Green
Ronnie Scott and 'The Band' appear by arrangement with Harold Davison

Tonight's programme brings together two of the wittiest men in jazz-Ronnie Scott, club owner, saxophonist and bandleader, and Jon Hendricks, singer and lyricist, writes Benny Green.
The TV debut of Scott's new band, combined with the salty professionalism of Hendrick's vocal delivery makes the programme one of the most intriguing in the whole series.

Three plays by Don Shaw

For the last twenty years Germany has been divided into East and West. For twenty years the guards of both sides have peered at one another with deep mistrust across the barbed wire. So when a young East German student tries to escape to the West, is blown up by a mine and lies between East and West, there is a problem for both sides. As his blood turns the snow crimson he could be a propaganda feather in someone's cap. But who is to make the first move?

Horizon - Man and Science today

It takes only a few weeks for the embryo in the mother's womb to take on the recognisable features of a human being. What factors in the mother's life influence life in the womb? It is only recently that the full significance of the foetus, as a patient who can be medically cared for, has been realised. Can emotional stress on the mother permanently affect her child? Can genetic abnormalities be recognised before birth? And if so, what medical and moral decisions should be taken? One baby in twenty is born handicapped, damaged at some stage during its development in the womb. Are some of these tragedies avoidable?
The research in this programme is of fundamental importance and could change the direction of medical advance.
