Presenters this week, Julie Stevens, Brian Cant
Today's story: "Monsieur Bussy the Celebrated Hamster" by Pascale Claude-Lafontaine

I saw a dog,
Who wasn't a dog
And a cat,
Who wasn't a cat...
Today Julie wonders how an animal like that would look and she tries making a clay model of it. Tomorrow, Dressing-Up Day, Brian has a guess and uses a sheet to make himself into a strange animal. Later in the week Julie and Brian ask you what you think it looks like and suggest you paint a picture.

The High Chaparral ...is the bid of a family seeking roots in the newly won West
...is the threat to the new settlers from Mexicans and Indians
...and spells adventure in the Arizona territory of 1870

Kilroy is a saddle tramp who walks into the High Chaparral, his saddle over his shoulder. Buck knows something of his past and is uneasy, Blue admires his ability with a gun, Big John his skill at the chess-board. He soon becomes a popular and valuable member of the team, but the past has a way of catching up with a man.

A series which explores living memory

"The old days were the days for filming. I think there was more humanity in our old films. I think it was because we didn't know so much about it. When you know too much about a thing you're apt to put more mechanical effort into your work - you forget all the humanities."
George Pearson, who celebrated his ninety-fourth birthday this month, was one of Britain's leading film directors in the great days of silent pictures.
In tonight's film he movingly recalls some of his early years: seeing moving pictures for the first time more than seventy years ago; making some of his first films during the first world war; turning Betty Balfour into a star in the early 1920s...
The programme includes excerpts from some of Pearson's films: Christmas Day in The Workhouse (1914) Nothing Else Matters (1920) Squibs Wins the Calcutta Sweep (1922) Reveille (1924)
(April 14: The Narrow-boat Men)
