Brought from England to marry a Scot she detests, Lady Helen escapes from her escort and is held to ransom by some outlaws. Sent to rescue her, Gavin falls in love with her and she with him. But to wed would only invite vengeance from her fiance's family and hers. Gavin's mother is appalled to realise that, despite this, they look like going ahead with their marriage.

Leslie Brewer on a Dorset lake in June
A soft swathe of mist over the completely still waters just after dawn. And for the waiting angler somewhere out in that blank expanse of water there is a great carp. It may at this moment be cautiously inspecting the bait with its sensitive barbules, going round it, smelling it, making up its mind whether or not to take it. And the only sign is that fold of silver paper over the slack of the line. Wham! The peace of the lake is shattered, the water disturbed, and the reel shrieks as the carp, the hook in its mouth, makes the first run-sometimes 100 to 150 yards.

A well-known psychiatrist is asked by the police to examine a murderer. The young man gives every appearance of being mad. It seems a routine case, but if it is - how does the young man know so many details of the psychiatrist's private life? How is it that he seems to possess strange and unaccountable powers?

This week and every week television in this country brings us the stories and issues that concern us - the argument, the evidence, the examination. We listen and we watch - sometimes we switch off or over - and then we make up our minds. But nearly all the coverage is seen through our eyes. Elsewhere in Europe the same process goes on - but there the view may be quite different.
