Achievement... Happiness... Tragedy... Stress...
A weekly programme which focuses on people and the situations which shape their lives
Reporters: Jim Douglas Henry, Jeremy James, Jeanne La Chard, Gillian Strickland, Desmond Wilcox, Harold Williamson

This week: Another Way of Life
Men with long hair, caftans, and sandals; girls without make-up, fierce with ideals, vocal with conviction. Beards and passion-sitar music and beads. Some of the symbols of revolution in 1969. People who want to opt out of the society most of us unquestioningly conform to. Men and women who reject the suburban life, the nine-to-five values, and the acceptance of governmental rules and social laws that the majority of us hardly ever challenge. But opt out to what? If they reject society as it is today, what would they have in its place?
There are communities all over Britain, little bands of fervent believers who have rejected and are attempting to replace.
The idea of escaping from the general rat-race is not new. Groups of people have been trying it for years. But in 1969 the way people go about it is sometimes different. With those who are trying today and those who saw it all happen yesterday Man Alive looks at the whys and wherefores of another way of life.

A selection of musical milestones from the golden days of the silver screen
starring Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland
with Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, June Preisser, William Tracy

A lively, tuneful story of a High School Band's attempts to turn itself into a streamlined orchestra.
This is the second Garland/Rooney film to be featured in The Hollywood Musical. The first, Babes in Arms, was seen some months ago. Both films were directed by Busby Berkeley, famed dance director of the 1930s, whose kaleidoscopic numbers were the keynote of countless M.G.M. musicals of the time. Arthur Freed has also long been associated with M.G.M.-the films he produced for that studio still rank as some of the best musicals ever made: Meet Me in St. Louis, On the Town, An American in Paris, and Singin' in the Rain are only a few.
Famous bandleader Paul White man makes a rare screen appearance in tonight's film. His patronage is instrumental in turning the school musicians into a hot swing combo.
