Cancer is probably one of the most frightening words in the medical vocabulary. It is a disease that has been known for a very long time; there are records of cancer in ancient Egypt long before the birth of Christ.
Nowadays we know the causes of some cancers and we can usually prevent them from arising. Other cancers can be discovered at an early stage and can be treated by surgery or other means.
Taking part in the programme are the Consultant Physician, a Research Pathologist, and a General Practitioner.

Bernard Braden reads from the works of Stephen Leacock

Stephen Leacock, although he lived most of his life in Canada and was for many years Professor of Political Economy at McGill University, Montreal, was born 100 years ago in the South of England. To celebrate the centenary of the birth of one of the world's greatest humorists, Bernard Braden assumes Leacock's role of lecturer and takes a look at the lighter side of life as Leacock saw it.

On the occasion of National Library Week, BBC outside broadcast cameras pay a visit to the world's most comprehensive Library at The British Museum.

George D. Painter, of the Library staff, shows a selection of beautiful and historic books and manuscripts, some of which have rarely been seen by the public.
Among the priceless manuscripts that viewers will be shown are the Lindisfarne Gospels, Lewis Carroll's Alice with his original drawings, Captain Scott's last diary, Handel's Messiah score with the composer's corrections, The Canterbury Tales printed by Caxton, and a rare first edition of Robinson Crusoe.
