Architecture in Europe since 1945
Ten programmes which take a look at the look and the attitudes of the last twenty-five years

Introduced by John Donat
The destruction of the war seemed to give planners and architects the opportunity they'd been waiting for - to build new towns, to try out Le Corbusier's ville radieuse, and to experiment with prepacked fabrication. But what happened?

Gordon Wilkins covers the world of motoring

If the Budget puts up fuel or vehicle tax, eleven million car owners will have to pay more for their motoring than ever before. In four years the price of petrol has gone up from 4s. to 6s. a galIon, the Road Fund licence from £15 to £25 and altogether road taxes of every kind have doubled to the record level of £4 million a day.
What would happen to the economy if motorists used less petrol or put off buying a new car? Does dearer motoring in Britain mean more cars for export? Why is it that only one pound in every five of motoring taxes goes on better roads?

A personal view by Kenneth Clark

This the second in the series of thirteen programmes has been filmed in the monasteries, abbeys, and cathedrals of France. The sudden reawakening of European civilisation in the twelfth century is traced by Sir Kenneth Clark from the first manifestations at the Abbey of Cluny to its high point, the building of the Cathedral of Chartres.
"Our intellectual energy, our contact with the great minds of Greece, our ability to move and change, our belief that God may be approached through beauty, our feeling of compassion, our sense of the unity of Christendom - all this, and much more, appeared in those hundred marvellous years."
