If the Budget puts up fuel or vehicle tax, eleven million car owners will have to pay more for their motoring than ever before. In four years the price of petrol has gone up from 4s. to 6s. a galIon, the Road Fund licence from £15 to £25 and altogether road taxes of every kind have doubled to the record level of £4 million a day.
What would happen to the economy if motorists used less petrol or put off buying a new car? Does dearer motoring in Britain mean more cars for export? Why is it that only one pound in every five of motoring taxes goes on better roads?
