Architecture in Europe since 1945
Ten programmes which take a look at the look and the attitudes of the last twenty-five years
Millions of homeless, flattened towns, ruined transport: these were the problems which faced Europe after the war. In England someone said: "We had a grim gratitude to the Luftwaffe for clearance we might not have had the courage to undertake ourselves; even at the height of the blitz plans were being made to rebuild and build anew."
What happened to these plans is the theme of the next three programmes.

Harry Louis, Editor-in-Chief, "Motor Cycle," looks forward to the bike of the 1970s; and Britain's top racing rider, Phil Read, and a motor cycle enthusiast, The Earl of Denbigh, test some of the latest luxury models from Britain, Germany, and Japan.

A personal view by Kenneth Clark
In this the first of a new documentary series of thirteen programmes, one of our most distinguished art historians and critics Sir Kenneth Clark examines the ideas and values which to him give meaning to the term Western Civilisation.
Tonight he looks at the Dark Ages, the six centuries following the collapse of the Roman Empire. Travelling from Byzantine Ravenna to the Celtic Hebrides, from the Norway of the Vikings to Charlemagne's chapel at Aachen, he unravels the extraordinary story of how European thought and art were saved by 'the skin of our teeth.'
